There’s just something about a natural looking tan that gives you a sexy, healthy vibe. Over time, as we became wise to the risks of tanning under UV lights, the popularity of spray tans increased, as did the number of products available. Nowadays you have a choice of chemical-based or natural spray tans, each with their own pros and cons. At Posh Face & Body, we choose to go natural. Here’s why…
What’s not so great about chemical-based products?
Chemicals are chemicals
Chemical tanners contain PEGs and parabens. PEGs (polyethylene glycols) are petroleum-based compounds used in cosmetics as thickeners, solvents, softeners, and moisture-carriers. Depending on how they’re manufactured, PEGs may be contaminated with ethylene oxide, a human carcinogen (that’s something that can cause cancer). It can also harm the nervous system. They also show some evidence that if used on broken skin can cause irritation or worse! PEGs help products be absorbed into the skin better, so it fast tracks any toxins to your system. PEGs also don’t easily degrade and can remain in the environment long after going down the drain.
Parabens are used to prevent bacteria and act as a preservative in cosmetics. There’s a chance they’re harmful as some studies have shown some parabens copy the activity of estrogen in the body’s cells, something associated with certain types of breast cancer. However, while parabens have been found present in some breast tumors, so far there is no hard and fast scientific evidence they cause cancer.
It’s hard not to inhale
Almost all tanning products (chemical or natural) contain something called DHA (short for dihydroxyacetone). This chemical was thought to be safe in the past but there is research coming out now that suggests it could be linked to certain conditions. It’s mostly deemed safe to go on skin but shouldn’t be inhaled. Spray tans don’t take long, but longer than you can probably hold your breath so there’s always the possibility you’re inhaling aerosols and DHA unless you wear a mask…but then your face would be a different colour. Conundrum!
More likely to react
If you have sensitive skin, or even if you don’t but you’ve never had a tan before, you may find the synthetic ingredients more likely to cause an irritating or allergic reaction.
